A OMD is often present when a child breathes through their mouth, sucks their thumb, bites their nails, speaks with their tongue forward (lisp), swallows by pushing against their teeth, etc. The structures (mouth, face) and functions (breathing, chewing, swallowing, and articulating) are assessed.​
